Half a King [2014]

This is a strange sort of a novel to come from Joe Abercrombie, because it is terribly terribly ordinary. I must have read a thousand novels just like this little fantasy excursion, because every single story beat felt familiar. Worst – it felt familiar from Abercrombie’s own work! All of the tropes from his first trilogy are here one way or another, but in a less inventive and less challenging form. From Abercrombie, this is very disappointing. From most other authors, it’d be just fine.
